Good morning readers — here is your Tuesday briefing.
We are sad to report that two serious collisions happened on Birmingham roads on Sunday. One has resulted in the tragic death of a pensioner, another with a 10-year-old boy in hospital with two broken legs. All the details are linked below, plus a police contact for anyone with information that may help their investigation.
On a lighter note — for Blues fans at least — a new signing and a win in a friendly fixture means things are looking up for the club. Plus, we have three events in the near-to-medium future for your diaries.
We’ll be back tomorrow with your mid-week story. Take care.
Brum in brief
🚨Two collisions: Police are investigating after a pedestrian, a man in his 60s, died in a car crash in Hockley on Sunday. Emergency services attended the scene on Great Hampton Street at around 3.45pm and a second man was taken to hospital with minor injuries. A driver is helping police with their enquiries. Mat MacDonald, co-chair of Better Streets for Birmingham, said: “It is utterly devastating that yet again, somewhere in our city, another family is waking up to the most unimaginable grief.” Read more on BirminghamLive.
Police are also asking for any witnesses who might have seen a collision in Selly Park on Sunday in which a 10-year-old boy had both his legs broken. A white Audi convertible mounted the pavement at the junction of Sir Harry’s Road and Pershore Road just after 6pm, after which the driver took the boy to hospital but left without leaving any details. Anyone with information is asked to contact West Midlands Police on Live Chat at www.west-midlands.police.uk (8am – midnight) or to call 101 any time. Please quote log 3372 of 21/7.
⚽Blues bites back: Icelandic mid-fielder Willum Thor Willumsson is the latest of seven new signings by Birmingham City Football Club. The relegated side has taken on the 25-year-old on a four-year deal from Dutch team Go Ahead Eagles as part of attempts to return to the championship. Willumsson played in 45 minutes of Saturday’s League One friendly 2-0 match against Shrewsbury where he received a swell of support from the Blues fans. “I never experienced this before,” he told BBC Radio WM. “It was amazing. I now cannot wait to play at our home stadium.”
🚪A week to remember: Birmingham Heritage Week will announce its full event programme soon, ahead of the 10th festival set to take place between 6 and 15 September. The annual event lets you through the doors of some of the city’s most iconic buildings to learn about their history — check their website from 3 August for all the details.
👑Long live the king: Tickets are on sale now for the Curry King of Birmingham annual fundraising dinner. This black-tie event sees teams go head-to-head to design the perfect curry from a list of ingredients and spices. Renowned caterers Mahirs Experience will then cook up the creations and the curry king will be crowned (but fear not — they will also make a delicious three-course meal for guests to enjoy). All proceeds go to LoveBrum who champion small charities that serve their communities. More info here.
🎤A lorra-laughs: Kings Heath Comedy Festival is on all weekend. You can check out Friday’s shows here, including Hannah Platt, described as the “voice of a new generation” by The Skinny.
It would be good to see writing that uses active voice when describing car crashes. A person does just die in a car crash. The car kills the person.
